William A. Shurcliff (“Bill Shurcliff”) was a Harvard physicist who independently tracked passive solar developments for decades. In this archive he matters for one book: Super Solar Houses (Brick House Publishing, 1983, 140pp, ISBN 978-0-931790-48-5), a focused survey of high-performance passive solar house design — and the documented channel through which Norman Saunders’ overhead-storage argument reached the Zomeworks thermal work.

The archive records nothing else biographical about him; the book is better documented than the man.

Super Solar Houses (1983)

A physical copy is in the Joule Heist collection (Libib item 56). The Joule Heist ingest notes list it as priority ingest candidate #2 — after A Golden Thread — flagging it at the time as “unknown to wiki.” It has not yet been ingested, so the archive knows the book only through Baer’s and Zomeworks’ citations of it.

Role in the Zomeworks thermal lineage

Baer’s Cool Cell brochure (2002) cites the book directly: “The advantages of interior storage of heat and coolth overhead have been explained by Norman Saunders in Bill Shurcliff’s book, Super Solar Houses.” The Saunders rationale, as relayed there: in summer warm air rises to the ceiling water mass and cool air returns; in winter heat descends by radiation and — unlike Trombe walls, drum walls, direct gain, or radiant floors — aluminum louvers make the radiant heat flow controllable rather than automatic.

Zomeworks’ Double Play Structures R&D page repeats the same attribution: the concept is credited to Norman Saunders, as explained in Bill Shurcliff’s Super Solar Houses.

Attribution dispute (preserved): the Zomeworks page credits the Double Play concept to Saunders via Shurcliff’s book, while Kayatekin’s ICON paper (2025) traces the lineage to Baer’s own stock pond melter thermosiphon of 1967–68. The sources disagree on origin; both are primary in different senses (vendor page vs. history-of-technology paper).
