The archive’s “Night and Day” piece argues that night is not empty or passive; it is full of thermal exchange that our eyes mostly miss. If we could see in infrared, the scene would be full of surfaces glowing by their own temperature, with ground, trees, rocks, and grass all participating in heat loss to space. Its central polemic: “Air temperature is vastly over honored and over measured” — at night the air only provides “second hand cooling,” pulled down behind surfaces that first cool themselves by shining heat into space.

The source is mostly philosophical, but it supports an important engineering habit: stop treating air temperature and daylight color as the whole story. The real action is in radiant exchange, which is why the archive keeps returning to roof surfaces, ceiling reservoirs, and exposed thermal mass.

That framing also helps explain why the same physical effect can feel surprising in ordinary life. We can stand in sunlight and get warm, or stand under a clear night sky and feel the chill, even though the air around us has not changed as much as the surfaces have.

Second-hand cooling is still cooling: the 1984 precursor

Eighteen years before “Night and Day,” Baer’s SUNPAPER essay “Cooling with Night Air” (January 1984) worked the engineering side of the same picture. There the night air — the “second hand” coolant that “Night and Day” demotes — is deliberately exploited: open the house at night so cool outside air flushes heat from the thermal mass, close it by day. Baer credits Harold Hay’s movable insulation as “revolutionary”: “The secret for summer comfort is to abandon the well insulated condition of the house as soon as it cools off during the night.” He defines an open-ventilation coefficient U₀, reports Baer House drum-and-air temperatures from 5:30 AM on August 23, 1983 (both drum rooms underventilated on still nights), and concludes natural convection alone is insufficient for most rooms — vents must be sized to move 1–2 cfm per square foot of exposed thermal mass.

Read together, the two pieces show a progression rather than a contradiction: in 1984 Baer engineers the air path because that is what an adobe house offers; by 2002 the Cool Cell work goes to the source — putting water in radiant contact with the sky — instead of settling for the air’s second-hand version of it.
