Researcher who by 1961 had built and tested a nocturnal-radiation cooling system at an Arizona house — a 280 ft² black cloth radiator storing 120,000 BTU of 'cold' in a 10-ton buried rock pile, about 2 tons of refrigeration — presented at the 1961 UN Conference on New Sources of Energy, Rome, and later named by Steve Baer as one of the ignored solar pioneers.

Researcher who had built and tested a nocturnal-radiation cooling system at a house in Arizona by 1961 — six years before Harold Hay‘s Phoenix prototype and roughly four decades before Baer’s Cool Cell. In the archive’s chronology of the thermal vision, Bliss is the experimental anchor of the scientific pre-history phase (1958–1964): the first documented person to demonstrate in the field the physics the archive is built on.

The archive documents him through Farrington DanielsDirect Use of the Sun’s Energy (Yale, 1964) and through Steve Baer’s own acknowledgment; it records no independent biography. Daniels cites him as “Bliss, R., Jr.”; Baer calls him “Ray Bliss.”

The Arizona experiment (1961)

Daniels (§13.3) describes the system:

“Bliss has made use of this nocturnal radiation in a house in Arizona, with a black cloth radiator 280 ft² in area. The ‘cold’ amounting to 120,000 BTU was stored in a 10-ton pile of rocks buried in the ground. The cooling was equivalent to about 2 tons of refrigeration.”

Bliss presented the work at the 1961 UN Conference on New Sources of Energy in Rome, under the title “Performance of an Experimental System Using Solar Energy for Heating and Night Radiation for Cooling a Building” (Daniels Ch. 9, footnote 170). The system used an unglazed flat-plate solar collector — heating and cooling from the same equipment, the di-thermal idea Daniels made explicit in the same chapter and that Baer later commercialized as di-thermal roofs. Daniels’ survey places the experiment in the same 1961 UN Conference literature as Harry Thomason‘s solar home papers and alongside Yanagimachi’s 1958 unified-system proposal.

The experiment sits squarely within Daniels’ documented physics for night-sky radiative cooling — 10–35 BTU/ft²/hr (2.9–10.3 W/ft²) in hot clear climates — figures directly consistent with Baer’s heated-vs-unheated-plates finding of “night radiation exceeds 9.5 W/ft²” (2002), 38 years later.

Baer’s acknowledgment

In his SunPaper article on unglazed solar collectors (March/April 2003), Baer named Bliss among the ignored pioneers:

“None of this is new. Decades ago solar pioneers, including Harold Hay, Ray Bliss and Harry Thomason, built heating and cooling systems that exploited this. Somehow their work was ignored. Giant budgets and brilliant minds moved in other directions. Their work was rarely cost effective, but they always had numbers to prove they were right.”

In the archive

Bliss appears on both sides of the archive’s two-traditions story. As an experimenter reported in the 1961 UN Conference literature and synthesized by Daniels, he belongs to the institutional scientific record — the independent validation table lists the Daniels/Bliss work as the earliest external confirmation of the physics Baer applied in the Cool Cell. Yet [[concepts/golden-thread-butti-perlin|A Golden Thread]] (Butti & Perlin, 1980), the mainstream 2,500-year solar history, omits Bliss’s nocturnal-radiation experiments entirely, along with Baer, Hay, and Thomason — negative evidence for the archive’s argument that the passive-cooling thread was dropped from the canonical history.

Whether Hay knew of Bliss’s work is not confirmed in the archive; Hay’s 1967 Phoenix prototype appears to have been independently developed.
